Don Mills
Don Mills, a mixed-use neighbourhood situated in the North York district of Toronto is one of Toronto’s best know and most popular neighbourhoods for families.
The Don Mills area was first settled by Europeans in 1817.
Though situated on the outskirts of the city at one time, Don Mills is now a commercial center for many prominent companies and feels pretty central in the overall view of urban Toronto.
Don Mills at that time in the 1950s, was an area consisting of about 20 farms, but now a self-supporting community with the area being home to the head offices of IBM Canada, the Toronto Real Estate Board, Global Television Station, and more.

Bringing together several favorable elements, Don Mills consists of residential, commercial, and industrial sub-districts. Landmarks in the area include the picturesque Donalda Golf and Country Club, and scenic Edwards Gardens. As a planned neighbourhood and developed by private enterprises, Don Mills seems to have it all including schools, shops parks, and reasonable real estate. Most of the original architecture that is inspired by Bauhaus and quite advanced for its time still stands today. Everything old is new once again.
Much of the district has been transformed once again with modern updates. For example, the former Don Mills Shopping Center that began in the 1960s as an outdoor shopping plaza is now reconstructed into an indoor shopping center.
Don Mills is filled with great shops and restaurants. The Shops in the area is a unique space where shoppers can enjoy an outdoor retail experience. Having more than 70 retail stores and restaurants, the Shops at Don Mills could easily be regarded as the town center. In addition to great shops and restaurants, Don Mills host many festivals and special community events at the Shops every year. Also, the Ismaili Center and the Aga Khan Museum of Islamic art are other unique features of Don Mills.
These two facilities are located side-by-side in a new 20-acre park on the Don Valley Parkway. These two genuine cultural and architectural landmarks of Toronto opened in 2014 with the Ismaili center serving as both a mosque and a community center while the stunning Aga Khan Museum is the first museum in the western world dedicated to Islam and Persian art and Muslim culture.
Don Mills is a family-friendly neighbourhood such that when you pass through the area, you get the feeling you’ve entered another town with its unique feature. With no clear favorite neighbourhood to choose from, Don Mills is worth considering.
